I’m just going to respond to one facet of this post, specifically the “how do I help” part. I understand your feelings of helplessness before a vast issue. I also know that many times there are local issues that deserve attention and make a difference. Is there something you can do in your area about housing insecurity, education, health care disparity, etc? Voting is certainly one part of the equation and holding elected officials accountable is another (have written to the person in office about X?). Mikki Kendall’s new book, Hood Feminism, is an excellent read geared toward answering your “what can I do” question. If the best way to eat a large helping is one bite at a time, start small and start local. And, if the people around you are white and in need of information, you can start there as well.
